What Is Lead Scoring?
Lead scoring assigns a numerical score to each lead based on what they've done and who they are. Higher score = hotter lead. Sales gets the highest scores routed first; lower scores stay in nurture sequences.
How it works
You define rules. Each rule adds (or subtracts) points based on a trigger. The system tracks the running total per lead. Above a threshold, the lead becomes Sales-Ready (typically tagged MQL: see glossary).
Example scoring ruleset
Behavior (what they do):
- Visited pricing page: +10
- Downloaded a guide: +5
- Opened 3+ emails in 7 days: +5
- Clicked a link in a sales email: +10
- Requested a demo or pricing: +20
- Visited >5 pages in one session: +10
- Unsubscribed from email: -10
- Inactive 30+ days: -5
Attributes (who they are):
- Matches ICP job title (e.g., "Director of Marketing"): +15
- Matches ICP company size (e.g., 50-500 employees): +10
- Matches ICP industry: +10
- Domain on competitor list (e.g., disqualified): -50
Sample threshold: 50 points = Sales-Ready Lead.
Behavior vs attribute scoring
Behavior scoring measures intent: what the lead does. Attribute scoring (sometimes called grading) measures fit: who the lead is.
A perfect lead has both: high intent (visiting pricing, downloading guides) AND high fit (matches ICP). A high-intent mismatch (small startup intensely browsing the enterprise tier) still scores high on behavior but should be routed to a nurture-only flow if attributes fail.
Where lead scoring shows up
- HubSpot: predictive lead scoring at Marketing Hub Professional+; manual scoring at all paid tiers.
- ActiveCampaign: rule-based scoring at Plus tier and above.
- Salesforce. Einstein Lead Scoring (AI-based) on Sales Cloud Enterprise+.
- Marketo, Pardot, both ship enterprise-grade scoring (and grading).
- GoHighLevel: basic scoring via tags and workflow conditions.
- Pipedrive, Close at entry tiers: no native scoring; integrate via Zapier or external tools.
Common scoring mistakes
- Too generous on behavior. Every action +10 means everyone scores 100. The signal is meaningless.
- No decay. A lead that visited pricing a year ago shouldn't count the same as one this morning. Time-decay scores.
- No negative actions. Unsubscribes, fake email addresses, and competitor signals should subtract. Otherwise scores only inflate.
- Threshold set without data. 50 points is arbitrary on Day 1; calibrate after 3 months of scored leads to find the threshold where Sales actually converts.

Frequently asked
What is lead scoring?
Lead scoring assigns a numerical score to each lead based on what they've done (behavior) and who they are (attributes). Higher score = hotter lead. Sales gets routed the highest scores first; nurture sequences keep the lower scores warm.
What scores should I assign to which actions?
Common pattern: +10 for visiting pricing page, +5 for downloading a guide, +20 for requesting a demo, -10 for unsubscribing from email. Attribute scores: +15 for matching ICP job title, +10 for matching company size. Most teams iterate from a baseline ruleset.
What's the difference between lead scoring and lead grading?
Lead scoring = behavior-based numeric score. Lead grading = attribute-based letter grade (A/B/C/D) for fit. Some platforms combine them. Pardot famously uses grade × score. HubSpot uses a single score with both behavior and attribute inputs.
Which CRMs include lead scoring?
HubSpot (predictive lead scoring at higher tiers), ActiveCampaign (rule-based scoring at Plus tier+), Salesforce (Einstein Lead Scoring), Marketo, Pardot. Sales-led CRMs like Pipedrive at the entry tier don't include native scoring: you'd integrate it.
